This was an image I created for the Beach Photo Club fall photo contest, in the "Graffiti in Context" category. It got tabbed with an honourable mention from the judges, meaning a framed version will be included in an exhibition at the Beacher Cafe in August. Yay!

This doorway is at Queen St. E. and River in downtown Toronto, where there's quite a bit of graffiti in an otherwise safe-ish part of town. I took my 4-year-old daughter there to snap some pictures, and the doorway caught my attention instantly. There's something about the juxtaposition of the darkened door and her innocent fluffy pink coat that I really like. Why is this little girl going there, and where does the door lead?

And I love the way the tag drips down from top to bottom, and behind her. The paint reflects nicely too, making the whole thing look wet. But I have NO IDEA what the tag actually says. Bark? Baryz? Doesn't matter really.

This image was actually a 3-image HDR, merged in Photomatix using the tone compressor - it brings out the reflections but still looks photographic. Details enhancing gives more dramatic results, but I wanted it to be subtle and true to the original. The bricks around the door looked quite nice, but seemed a bit cheerful so I cropped them out. I like how it naturally fades to black at the edges with this cropping.

'LAMBEAU FIELD: What a fun idea! Thanks to my sister, I was able to get a wonderful photo at Lambeau Field with my cute little SnapTote purse. Everyone was wondering what I was doing, and I was so excited I had to explain the whole contest. Thanks Snaptotes!!!!' -Stacey D.
