Winners of Gin-GRR-Bread Kids’ Farm Habitat Contest Revealed During ZooLights at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo
The spotlight of ZooLights fell on the Kids’ Farm, sponsored by State Farm®, Sunday at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Three winners were chosen from 23 entries for the Gin-GRR-bread Kids’ Farm Habitat contest, sponsored by Starbucks in a ceremony hosted by Scott Thuman of ABC7/WJLA-TV and Debbi Jarvis, Pepco Holdings vice president of Corporate Citizenship and Social Responsibility. A winner and an honorable mention were awarded for three categories:
Family Group
Winner: JoAnn Willis and son Zachary, of Arlington, Va., for “Dr. Zhoo-vago’s Winter Wonderland”
Honorable Mention: Hanna Al-Kowsi and team, of West Friendship, Md., for “Farmyard Festivities”
Adult Individual
Winner: Barbara Mattson, of Vienna, Va., for “Winter Wonderland Country Fair”
Honorable Mention: Roxanne Roberts, of McLean, Va., for “Snow Day at the Kids’ Farm”
Adult Team
Winner: Randy Spicer and team, of Sterling, Va., for “State Farm Gingerbarn”
Honorable Mention: Corinne Groesbeck and team, of Chantilly, Va., for “A Whimiscal Wonderland”
White House pastry chefs, Bill Yosses and Chris Phillips, and Dana Spence of State Farm®, evaluated the sugary designs, along with a team from the National Zoo. The entries were judged on aesthetic appeal and animal comforts. All entries were asked to incorporate shelter, water, space for animals to move around, climb, jump and explore, and enrichment objects.
The winning prize for each category is a behind-the-scenes tour of the Elephant Barn for 10 people. The tour includes a special viewing of the Zoo’s Asian elephants’ morning baths.
All of the Gin-GRR-bread Kids’ Farm Habitat Contest entries will be on display in the visitor center every night of ZooLights. ZooLights runs every night beginning Dec. 16, except Dec. 24, 25, and 31.
