541927_Al Capone's Soup Kitchen, Chicago IL

Title of original NARA item 541927: Unemployed men queued outside a depression soup kitchen opened in Chicago by Al Capone, 02/1931. Original NARA photo from US Information Agency archives.

This photo was taken by Arlen Parsa on January 4th, 2011 at the same location (935 S. State St). The original sign read "Free Soup, Coffee and Doughnuts for the Unemployed." Capone was in prison less than a year after he opened the soup kitchen as a publicity stunt. The lot where his charity once stood is now a parking lot. The City of Chicago recently issued a request for proposals to redevelop the property however.
