Death of Edwin Edwinson
Edwin Edwinson was born in Norway, Feb 6, 1846, and died at Valley Falls, Kansas, March 25, 1906, age 60 yrs. 1 month and 19 days. When he was 6 years of age his parents, with their family of nine children came to the United States and settled in LaSalle County, Illinois, sometime in 1852.
At the beginning of the Civil War, he with two brothers , enlisted in the 12th Illinois volunteer infantry for the term of three years. Just before the end of his enlistment period Mr. Edwinson was taken prisoner and for nine months suffered the horrors of imprisonment at Andersonville, Libbey and other southern prisons.
After the close of the war he located in Missouri near Kansas City. He was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Whitehouse in 1874, and to them were born nine children, five of who survived: Mrs. Mary Gettler, Archie, Lee Andrew ), Mrs. Louisa Sarah Keen and Louie.
Coming to Kansas about 23 years ago, he settled upon his farm five miles north of Valley Falls, which has since been his home. His wife and four children have proceeded him into the other world, Mrs. Edwinson dying some two years ago.
His funeral was held from the Lutheran church Tuesday afternon. Rev. J.M. Herbst officiating, followed by the funeral service of the G.A.R. Post, of which he was a member, and concluding with the burial ceremony of the M.W.A. of which order he was a beneficiary member. The Post and Lodge members attended in a body. The body is at rest by the side of his wife in Rose Hill cemetery. His death was unexpected. He fell a victim to pneumonia. A week before his funeral he started on a visit to his brother at Des Moines, Iowa, thence to Montana to accompany his niece Miss Ruth Snyder to her home. He was not feeling well and when he reached St. Joe, concluded to return home. Arriving in town here Tuesday night, he went to Frank Schultz, expecting to go on home next day. He grew worse, and though a physician was called, he passed away Sunday afternoon. Mr. Edwinson was a kind and indulgent father, hospitable to all and a neighbor with a tender heart for everybody. Loved his home and children, was good natured and though once a soldier was noncombative in sentiment. Though sometimes easily influenced he was wedded to conventional forms and beliefs which impressed him. He was satisfied with things as they were and enjoyed the ideal as well as the real world.
Being a veteran of the army he loved the flag of his country, and was ever a staunch Republican in National contest. At his home years ago he raised a 60 foot flag pole and on proper occasions he would unfurl "Old Glory" to the breeze, the proudest man on Hickory Creek Ridge. He was a patriot through and through and read in the Stars and Stripes the beauty and glory of Liberty.

The arrival of May means better weather for most of us, and at least one holiday for the folks in the U.S. Got any vacation plans, errands to be done, or general hanging out? Mark the occasion with a note. :-)
