A few months ago I received an email inviting me to sign up for a photo project/contest called 24 Clicks.

The premise was this. 400 people were sent analog (ie real film) disposable cameras, and a list of 24 descriptive words. Take 24 photos that you felt interpreted these words in photogrphic form. Then mail the camera into the people running the contest, and they would develop the photos and post them, alongside the corresponding word, on a contest site. The photos are open for voting.

The words were things like "culture", "creativity", "get mean" and "Shock and Awe".

I shot these photos with the disposable camerain Toronto, Canada and Brooklyn, NY. I had a few issues with the disposable camera. There were 24 words on the list, but the camera had 27 exposures, and because of the way the film counter was constructed, I had a really difficult time telling what exposure I was actually shooting. When I sent in my camera, with the corresponding list of words, they got a bit mixed up. Many of the photos ended up matched to the wrong words, so they seem to not make sense...or I could pretend I was just being artsy and abstract.

I had a lot of fun doing this. I can't remember the last time I actually shot with film, never mind the last time I used a disposable camera. It was a cool challenge to use a cheap-o disposable camera and see what kind of photos I ended up with. It also was a challenge to shoot with a camera that has a fixed focus, it makes you choose and line up your shots in a completely different way. Trying to choose shots that reflected the words and phrases was a worthwhile exercise. It got me thinking about my photos in a different way while I was doing it.

Although I realize I have zero shot of winning (I'd be happy to even get 1 vote at this point!), here is the link to the photo page at 24 Clicks.

Overall, this an enjoyable way to shoot photos I would normall never take, with a different kind of camera, and time well spent for me.
